If you live on a lake, chances are you have a boat. Lake boating is a wonderful way to enjoy family activities and relaxation year-round. Whether you own a popular, old-style runabout or a luxury pontoon, strong, quality boat house lifts are essential to safely get your boat in and out of the lake. Runabouts During the 1950s, fiberglass boats became very popular. The boat of choice became the 15-foot to 18-foot runabout with a modest horsepower engine. Its design featured a seated driving position, a rear bench at the transom, and a front windshield that protected the driver and riders from water and wind. […]

By: Kelly Soderlund, Hipmunk Staff                        Exploring Established & Emerging Wine Regions With Eater Drinks Editor Kat Odell  It’s crush season, and no, we’re not talking about football. We’re talking about wine harvesting season, which begins when the grapes are picked and continues through processing and fermentation. From early September through late October, wineries throughout the Northern Hemisphere open their doors to novices and snobs alike who’ve come from far and wide to crush grapes, eat great food, and, of course, to […]

On September 9, Queen Elizabeth II became the longest reigning British monarch in history, passing the record set by her grandmother, Queen Victoria. In her 63 years on the throne, she has seen the world move into the modern age politically, culturally, and scientifically. She may well go down in history as the technological Queen: her coronation in Westminster Abbey was the first ever to be broadcast on television, and her annual Christmas broadcast is now available on YouTube. She even wrote her first tweet last year about London’s Science Museum. The […]

Tipping is a hot topic in the United States these days, as rising minimum wages call into question the standard practice of making servers reliant on tips. For travelers abroad, tipping is an equally sticky issue. Figuring out what to tip when can all too quickly turn a relaxing vacation into a stressful one. Knowing what to tip, on the other hand, can empower travelers to navigate a foreign culture with ease. Because tipping rules vary by country, region, and place of business, it’s important to research your destination’s customs prior to any […]

This post was posted by TheHipmunk on Hipmunk’s Tailwind blog on 9th September 2015. pictures of holiday Summer’s endless possibilities have ended, school is back in session, and vacations have come to their conclusion. Or have they? Because so many people travel to exotic destinations during the summer months, airlines face a huge drop in demand from August to September—and flight prices drop as a result. In travel industry jargon, this period between peak and off-peak seasons is known as the “shoulder season.” So while September is still a great time to visit many vacation destinations (the weather hasn’t changed that much), you can actually get better prices […]

Recently I found a really cool new online tool which I thought I’d introduce you to Grammarly. I started using Grammarly as a cool and easy to use tool which speeds up my travel writing stories somewhat. Basically it auto corrects in obscenely tight detail. The dangers of travel writing and our stuff being on the internet mean that it’s easy for someone else to steal our stuff – yes even stealing our words, out thoughts and our photos. That’s why I love the Plagiarism Checker from Grammarly. This way, you will never have your content stolen again as it susses it out straight away. […]

These airlines have taken pains to make sure that your journey is about more than getting you from Point A to Point B, and have stocked their systems with so many distractions that you’ll forget you’re in the air. 1. Melbourne is the home of Aussie rules football, the film and TV industries, and a major center for literature and street art. Those interested in exploring something unique to Melbourne, and not seen in many other cities, should consider spending a day exploring the various laneways of the city, also known as “arcadeways.” In the early days of the city, the laneways, which date mostly to the Victorian era, consisted of pathways for horses and carts, behind buildings, with roofs later added to protect from the weather. For decades, the untapped potential of […]
