Exploring London’s Hippy District: Camden Town
Deep within London, away from all those busy office blocks sits remarkable Camden Town. This gem of a place is a hippy commune. It’s famous for its canals, its downright good music, its drug and sex scene and general hippy stuff! If you read our cool post on backpacking through Christiania in Copenhagen recently, this place is even funkier but without the whole crazy sh*t of leaving the country. In Christiania you’ve left Denmark for a hippy freetown. Here in Camden, your body is still in England, your mind might be elsewhere. Here are 5 top things to check out in Camden Town, London, England.
1. Bars
Camden is famous for bars. The Dublin Castle and the World’s End are two of my personal favourites to while away the hours without a care in the world. Just head to Camden Town tube station or Mornington Crescent, alight and you will find lots of bars and clubs. Make sure you sign up for a London Oyster Card.
2. Rock Clubs
By night this is when it livens up. Rock stars like Gem Archer and Noel Gallagher have been known to come here at night to watch gigs. Personally I love the vibe of rock clubs like Koko and the Barfly.
3. Drugs
Admittedly it’s not for me, and some of the drugs on sale in Camden are of course illegal, it’s not quite as relaxed as Amsterdam, and the British Police do man the streets, so stay discreet if you’re getting into the wacky backy in Camden Town. You’ll not be long sniffing the Cannabis from some Bob Marley lookalike as you breathe in the Camden Air.
4. Sex
Camden could just be England’s answer to Suzi Wong’s world of Wan Chai Hong Kong. Thai massage parlours in vibrant Camden offer all sorts of sneaky services and by night Sexy escorts in London are readily available for those who want to indulge and are not ashamed to do it. Sex should be a good thing for society, so never see a sex zone as a negative area. If that’s not your scene, there are plenty of sex shops around to browse.
5. Canals
Probably the most sensible option on the Camden backpacking list are the canals. Enjoy a ride on a “London gondola” or cycle through the paths not knowing where you will end up! Some people admit they didn’t even know London had canals.
So that;s a quick five things to check out when you are in Camden town, London – it’s a great place!
