A Flavour of Melbourne, Australia
If you’re headed to the city of Melbourne in Australia, you may be wondering what there is to do there. The thing with Melbourne is that there’s so much to see and do there that you’ll have to pick and choose depending on how much time you have to spend in this vibrant city. I’ve passed through it 3 or 4 times and always find new things to do!
Melbourne is Australia’s second city in terms of population and is considered to be the centre of Australian art and culture. The city is the home of the Australian film industry and the Heidelberg School – Australian impressionist art. The TV industry of Australia is also based here and it’s in Melbourne that you’ll find the Australian Centre for the Moving Image and the National Gallery of Victoria.
You can do an awesome Neighbours Tour which gets you behind the scenes at Ramsay Street, where Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue once hung out. At night Melbourne is also a great city to party in with lots of bars and some organised pub crawls.
Like any Australian city, Melbourne is also home to different sports. The Melbourne Cricket Ground has been an institution since 1853 and hosts all different levels of cricket matches, as well as being a venue for entertainment events and other sports.
The Australian Open also takes place in Melbourne every January. As the first of the four tennis Grand Slams in the year, the Australian Open is always eagerly anticipated after Christmas. This year, Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka won the Men’s Singles for the first time, but bookies like Paddy Power have Djokovic, Nadal and Murray down as favourites to win in 2015. If you’re going to be in Melbourne while the tennis is on, it’s a great event to see in person.
Another sport that draws visitors to the city of Melbourne is the Formula One Grand Prix which takes place in March and is the first Grand Prix of the Formula One season each year.
Melbourne is located on the banks and estuary of the Yarra River, which makes for a great place to take a walk or go out for food and drink at one of the many riverside bars. In fact, Melbourne has a great food reputation, so wherever you are in the city you’ll find great cafes and restaurants. Take a wander round the suburb of Fitzroy – where you’ll discover the Museum of Melbourne, and if you like arts and crafts, explore the Rose Street Artists Market for interesting locally-produced items to take home with you. If you’re after the boutiques, then head to Brunswick Street.
Outside of the city, you’ll be able to take in the beautiful scenery of the Yarra Valley where there are plenty of vineyards to visit as well as the Healesville Sanctuary Wildlife Park to get a glimpse of koalas and platypuses.
The big question when planning a trip to Melbourne isn’t ‘what is there to do?’; it’s more ‘how can we fit it all in?
